We Explore Farey Fractions

IMG_4128
A Farey Fraction sequence of order N is formed by putting all reduced fractions (between zero and one) with denominators less than or equal to N into order from smallest to largest.  Thus the sequence of order five is:
0/1, 1/5, 1/4, 1/3, 2/5, 1/2, 3/5, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 1/1
Above, the students have made a Farey fraction “train” where each car carries one fraction.  They

‘ve added cars for fractions up to twelfths!  If you make one, check fraction placement using cross products and you will notice something very strange.  There are lots of other patterns, too.  Enjoy.
